Why Kokoro

Heart, mind and spirit, treated as one thing.

Kokoro is the Japanese word for exactly that — the idea that you can’t fix one part of a person and call it done.

Most sober living is sold on structure. Structure matters, and we have plenty of it. But the thing that actually keeps somebody in a house past the first hard week is whether the house is somewhere they can stand to be.

So we started there. Every guest gets a full-size bed — not a bunk, not a cot. Their own dresser. Closet space that is theirs. A desk with a real monitor, because job-hunting from a phone is miserable. Common rooms big enough that you can be around people without being on top of them. Outdoor space at every house. A pool at one. An acre and horses at another.

None of that is a substitute for the work. It just removes every excuse not to do it.

03

The standard

What’s in every house, without asking.

Not upgrades. Not the “premium” room. This is the floor.

01

Everything is brand new — the homes and the furniture

Brand-new construction or full renovations, and brand-new furniture throughout. People deserve to rebuild their lives somewhere clean, modern and dignified — that’s the standard, not the upgrade.

02

A full-size bed — never a bunk

Every guest, every house. A real bed, your own dresser, and storage with your name on it. No bunk beds, anywhere, ever.

03

Computers, printers and fast internet

Job applications, coursework, resumes, telehealth, paperwork — the tools for independence are in the house, not at a library across town.

04

Room to actually live

A pool at Community, an acre and horses at Deveron Ridge, a garden at Nevada — plus gym and recreation space, patios and outdoor gathering areas. Confirm which property has the basketball court & gym

05

A kitchen built for cooking

Full-size appliances, real counter space, and enough of it that four people can be in there at once. Guests cook. Learning to feed yourself again is not a small part of this.

06

Utilities, wifi and laundry included

One rate, no surprise line items. Confirm inclusions — see Admissions & Cost for exactly what is and isn’t covered.

04

Structure

The part that isn’t comfortable.

A beautiful house with no expectations is just an expensive place to relapse. So there are rules, they are written down, and they are enforced the same way for everybody.

01

Random drug and alcohol testing

Randomly selected, observed collection, refusal counts as a positive. Full protocol is published — we don’t make you ask. Read it.

02

Curfew, and a house manager who keeps it

Curfew by phase. Someone is responsible for the house, and they live there. Confirm live-in / hours

03

Meetings, and a monthly community meeting

Outside recovery meetings, plus a monthly community meeting where the whole house talks — the household, the friction, the wins. We don’t require any particular fellowship and we have no affiliated outpatient provider you’re obligated to attend.

04

Work, school, or something

After a settling-in period, guests are expected to be doing something with their days. Employment, school, volunteering, treatment — we’re not precious about which.

05

Chores, and paying rent on time

Unglamorous and non-negotiable. A house runs on whether people do the dishes.

06

Walk through first

See the house before you ever pick up the phone.

Every Kokoro house is being captured in full 360°, room by room — bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, common areas, the yard. You can walk the entire property from your kitchen table at two in the morning, which is usually when families are actually looking.

Tours are shot with the houses empty and staged. No guest appears in any photograph or tour on this site, ever.

“This isn’t simply a bed. It’s a well-designed environment built to support someone’s next chapter.”
